The Intellectual Productivity of a Creative Imagination.
West Windsor Arts Council is proud to introduce “Journaling The Journey” – a premier gallery showcase featuring the art of the design thought process sourced from over 30 years of Mikel’s personal sketchbooks and notebooks. Get inside the designer’s mind where you’ll witness the magical wonder of creativity. Delve into the secret world of design thinking and his passion for self-expression and visual language. More than an exhibit, it’s the fruitfulness of a creative life exposed.
The Art of design thinking and the creative process
Impactful as your completed design may be, the early words and images that inspired and constructed its final form bear messages of their own.
Journaling the Journey invites you to explore the creative process of artist and designer Mikel Cirkus, and through this experience, come to appreciate the process of your own creativity.
“The beauty of journaling is that you can literally see thought coming to page,” says Mikel. “The pages develop from brain to heart, to hand to pen, to paper.”
Mikel’s journals span the past 37 years of his life and comprise 44 completed journals with Number 45 in progress. His venues: cities from around the world. His content: professional notes, personal reflections, quotes, lyrics, and sketches. His inspiration: travel and everyday experiences that capture his attention as a cultural anthropologist and trend observer.
Mikel’s working tools are simple: blank pages from a sketchbook, a basic pencil kit, and spit and blood as needed. For this show, he enlarged a select few of his Journal Entry selections up to 10 times and transferred their content to different media.
The Journals’ Journeys
“You can’t predict the outcome of the sketch or thought you put down on the page,” says Mikel. When he was 15, Advertising Entrepreneur, Allen Kay looked at his then current sketchbook and urged him to pursue his passion at California’s Art Center College of Design after completing high school. He did just that, and eventually landed a position at Firmenich Inc. where he works today as Global Director of Conceptual Design, for their Flavors Division.
During the summer of 2015, he met street artist WK Interact at ART Alliance in Chicago and asked for an autograph. While scanning for a page to sign in Journal 38, WK urged him to exhibit his content. In December 2016, legendary comedian Robert Klein gave him the same advice while signing his portrait which Mikel had sketched in Journal 39.
At the start of Journal 44, Mikel met with West Windsor Arts Council Executive Director, Aylin Green, who invited him to exhibit his work as a three-week Gallery from August 19th to September 7th, 2018 in Princeton Junction, NJ. He said Yes, to this – in what will be his first one-man show. The Opening Reception is on August 25th, 2018.
